Modifier 24

The billing modifier 24 is used to indicate that an unrelated evaluation and management service was performed by the same physician or other qualified health care professional during the post operative or global period. This modifier is often used when a patient presents with multiple complaints that require separate evaluations. For example, if a patient comes in for a knee surgery follow up and also mentions that they have been having difficulty with their knee, the provider may use the billing modifier 24 to indicate that two separate services were provided. When submitting claims with the billing modifier 24, it is important to include documentation that justifies why the two services were unrelated. Otherwise, the claim may be denied.
